Tuesday Treasure

Time to share once again what we hold as a Treasure in our lives. Whether it is a family member, an item we received for our birthday, a anniversary gift, or anything that you treasure in your life.

This week I chose something that is very special to me and it will still be a fabulous treasure when it is worn completely out. For I am sure one day it will be worn out from me wearing it so much. It's something that was made for me a month or so ago. I have planned many times to have posted it by now but a picture was required and no one in my family acts like they know how to use the camera when I ask them to!!! At that point they all get dumb and dumber. So the only picture I have of it is one I stole from the gift er of this treasure. One day I will make someone take my picture wearing it if only to send it to her.

Marlene at Country Girl on the Chesapeake Bay made this wonderful, unique, one of a kind apron for me. She knows how much I love my Nascar Racing and how special it will always hold a place in my heart. You see, Nascar is one of the things that brought Trucker and I together. It's also where we had our belated honeymoon and how we spend our Sunday's together. It is also one of many things that Marlene and I have in common as well.

I know she put a lot of love and work into it and nothing means more to me than that. I will forever cherish this Treasure. Thanks Marlene.

If you would like to show us your Tuesday Treasure just add your post to Mr. Linky below. I hope I got this post out early enough for everyone who wishes to take part.

May your life be filled with many treasures,

Chefdruck Musings: Chicken Soup for the Soul Mother's Day Giveaway

What a great giveaway gift for a mother daughter or mother/son. Would also make a nice gift for mothers with sons or daughters heading off to college.

Chefdruck Musings: Chicken Soup for the Soul Mother's Day Giveaway

A Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY...APRIL 27, 2009

Outside my window...Life is beautiful. The hummingbirds are eating from my feeder finally, the garden is growing and thriving, Trucker mowed the yard and it's now gorgeous. Later I plan on being outside to plant more veggies and start some seedlings.

I am thinking...About how much I have to do today and should have done more over the weekend. Oh well, I've got all week I guess.

I am thankful for...the fact that Trucker was home both days over the weekend. He needed that break so bad for rest.

From the learning rooms...That being home each day can be nice if you make it that way. That my family really doesn't care how clean the house is as long as food is on the table. I am learning that living simply is living well.

From the kitchen...I won't be doing any cooking tonight. Over the weekend I made two huge homemade chicken pot pies and will be eating on those again today. Leaving me more time to clean the kitchen.

I am wearing...A simply ugly summer dress but I love it. It is flouncy (that is a word) and falls around my knees. It is bright and vibrant and covered in hot pink flowers and green leaves on a leopard background. I said it was ugly, but it is so comfortable.

I am creating...a home that anyone would feed comfortable to visit and live in. I have finally become the "housewife" I dreamed of being.

I am going...to plant wildflowers today on all the kittens graves. We have lost four of the little kitties in the last three days. They will now be known as the "Wildflowers".

I am reading...various magazines I have recently gotten in the mail. "Victoria", Harper's Bizarre, Organic Gardening and many more.

I am hoping...that I make someone smile each day. I have made it a goal to make at least three people a day smile and laugh.

I am hearing...The quiet sounds of the air conditioners running in the background. I stood it as long as I could but when the inside of the house reached 85 degrees I had to turn them on. Hot flashes you know!

Around the house...The floors are dirty, the kitchen is a mess, the bed is covered in clean laundry to be folded and more to go on the line. But it is HOME.

One of my favorite things...is going outside about dusk and sitting close to the hummingbird feeder and watching them eat. Trying to take pictures of them is so very hard but I am determined to get at least one this summer.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Just enjoying being home and doing my usual things.

Here is picture thought I am sharing...This is how my container garden looks so far. I snapped these pictures late yesterday evening as the sun was going down.

Feisty, Frugal and Fabulous

I discovered Feisty, Frugal and Fabulous a couple of months ago and immediatly subscribed to her blog. She has wonderful frugal tips and fabulous giveaways there. Right now she has several giveaways going on. I just entered one for her Peek A Boob strips. Peek-A-Boob Strips were created initially to help women avoid the gap that happens when we wear button down shirts. After Peek-A-Boob Strips were created, other uses for them became evident and one of those uses tackles the under arm bra-exposure that I was dealing with.

Feisty has about 15 giveaways going on now. Jump over there and enter today. Tell her TTruckers wife sent you. You'll also find her button in my sidebar on the left in which you can click daily to check her blog out. Tell your friends and pass this around.

Good luck winning,

Prissy Green, Living Beautiful-Naturally

I ran across Prissy Green today while entering a few more contest giveaways and wanted to alert everyone here to them. She has wonderful giveaways going on right now. Giveaway Saturdays

I never have much to write about on Saturdays as I am usually busy around the house and spending time with the family. However I do get on the computer from time to time during the day and enter giveaways and check my email. So I thought that I would share some of the wonderful giveaways that I enter so that others can enter as well.

One of the blogs I read and participate in the giveaways on is Grammy Janet's Place. If you notice I placed her button in my sidebar a couple of months ago to share her sight with everyone. Janet has wonderful giveaways that are not baby related. I love a good giveaway but let's face it, most of the ones I have found are all about baby items, or maternity items, or beginning mommy's. Now let me make myself perfectly clear here, there is absolutely nothing wrong with those type giveaways but I am long past the baby stage in my life and have no need for those types of gifts. So I am always on the search for something that women of my age can enjoy and actually use.

Grammy Janet is just one of those people who is a grandmother like myself and has reached a certain age in her life too. This week I am letting you all in on the giveaway she has going on now. It's for a wonderful book by Charla Krupp called "How Not To Look Old" and is all about
details on hair color, brows, lipstick, wrinkle-erasers, jeans, shape wear, jewelry, heels, and more, the book speaks to every woman: from low maintenance types who don't want to spend a fortune or tons of time on her looks to high maintenance women who believe in looking fabulous at any price.

Known to national audiences from her ten years on NBC's Today show, style expert Charla Krupp dishes out her secrets in this "ultimate" to-do list for looking hip and fabulous -- no matter what your age.

Hachette Book Group is the sponsor for this giveaway.

If you would like to enter this great giveaway jump over to Grammy Janet's Place and enter today.

Check back later today at different times and as I enter a wonderful giveaway I will come back here and share them with you.

Happy Saturday my friends,

Frugal Friday & Verbena Custom Blends Giveaway

Today's Frugal Friday tips are going to be short and sweet because I am tired. It's been a long week of working in my yard planting flowers and veggies. Even though they are short tips they are good ones.

Let's start with gardening. Since I am working on it so diligently myself. If you have enough yard or land start a garden. Yes it is work but it's fun work and will save you money from all the fresh produce you grow yourself. It saves more money to purchas
e and start your own seeds than to buy the actual plants. So remember this for your garden. Also catch rain water for watering the garden. You can even use water from cooking. Like the water left from boiling spaghetti noodles and such. Your veggies will love it.

Miscellaneous tips:

Only get haircuts every 8-10 weeks, instead of every 6 weeks. Now if you think you can't go over 6 weeks you'll be surprised that just the addition of an extra two weeks is not bad. This will knock down the cost of haircuts from 9 a year to only about 6. That's quite a bit of savings for yourself.

Do your own manicures as well. I know it's not the same as having someone else do them but the savings are substantial. I have never had a professional mani or pedi. I have survived too.

Shop year round for Christmas gifts when you notice the stores having sales. Don't wait till the last few months before the holidays as prices go up. Shop thrifty sales and save yourself money.

Dumpster dive, if you’re brave and it’s legal where you are. I know several of you just turned up your noses on that one but I have done it a few times myself. I have a nice end table in my dining room which holds my purse and those items everyone throws down when coming in daily. I found it outside a neighbors house for the weekly garbage pickup. There is nothing wrong with it. The sign on yesterday post on my little wisteria vine bird house we made was from a dumpster dive. I repainted all of it including the lettering and it's cute as punch now.

Have a yard sale. The weather has been nice enough here to start all the yard and thrift sales in our area. You are not only eliminating clutter from your home but making some extra money as well. De-cluttering is working towards a more simple lifestyle and saves you time on dusting all those knick knacks you can sell. Put what you earned into a savings account or use it to splurge on a nice dinner out.

If you have items left from your yard sale get rid of them on Freecycle. Also if you need anything ask on Freecycle if someone has what your looking for. You'll be surprised at how much you can find for free. Nothing is better than free in my book. I have someone who has been saving me the five gallon buckets I am using for my garden containers.

Never spend your change. Bring it home and put it into a bank or jar and once a week stick it into your savings account. It will grow in no time and you'll never miss that change.

Enter blog giveaways. Yes, you can actually win from time to time. I am living proof. I honestly really thought I wouldn't ever win but have won many nice items I needed. I've won books, purses, a new pair of capri jeans from Lee, gift bags and even a couple of gift cards to Walmart and a restaurant. It only takes a little time and there are literally hundreds of giveaway blogs out there.

If you get a raise at work or a bonus, use it for paying off credit cards or put it into your savings acct. Don't change your way of being frugal or change your budget. Simply forget you have it. If you have automatic deposit at work, change the bonus or pay raise to automatically go into your savings. You'll never miss what you didn't have to begin with.

I know I've talked to you about various ways we are cutting back and being frugal here at our house. I wanted to let you know that coupons are working really well for me. Last week I saved over $100 on our grocery bill. It did take me quite a few hours to shop and get all my coupons together and which stores I needed to go to but for that amount of savings it was well worth it. My best purchase to date was last week. I had noticed that our local Walmart had a sale on V05 shampoo and conditioner for $1.00 a bottle. I remembered seeing a coupon (printable) online for $1.00 off each. I came back home and printed out 10 coupons. Returned back to the store and got 10 bottles completely free. I have stocked up on shampoo and conditioner now and we won't be needing any for quite some time.

Also by using our clothesline each time I do laundry it has made our electric bill go down an average of $50 a month. No one is complaining about stiff clothes now.

Something else I have been doing for a few months now is taking surveys online for cash or points and also "getting paid to read emails". I honestly thought when I started it would be some sort of hoax or gimmick. But it really works and you earn a little extra money or gift cards. I have already made about $60 for what little time it takes to do the surveys they send me. Also another sight which pays you in points for shopping through them sent me a $10 gift card to Red Lobster and a $15 gift card to FTD flowers. Next week I will be discussing how to do this more and provide everyone with the needed links for those interested in doing the same.

A Day Of Work, Fun & Being Creative

Today was the most beautiful day of 2009 thus far here in Arkansas. Temperatures were in the 80's, the sun was shining bright, no rain (first time in a week) and light winds. A perfect day to work outdoors. And boy did I work outside today. Right now my body is making me pay for it. Legs and back aches, and my allergies, oh God I am now eating Benadryl's, but it was worth it.

I actually managed to get 6 rose bushes planted, 1 hydrangea bush and 2 wisteria vines planted as well. Plus I got 2 zucchini, 3 cucumbers, 6 tomato plants, and abo
ut 20 various pepper plants all planted.

I know that wisteria vines have to have something heavy and sturdy
to grow on and climb along and around. I had nothing. Although now they are barely one foot tall I know they grow fairly fast. Now mind you what with being all frugal and a money miser of late I didn't want to go and purchase anything for this. So I got creative with my thinking. I took a look around the yard and the house and this is what I came up with.

It's made from scraps of things I found around the house. The base of it Jerry had built from scrap lumber and made it to hold our rakes, hoe, and shovels. The top of the house is made from 2 plantation window shutters which covered one of our windows in our bedroom. We had removed them to put in a window air conditioner. The birdhouse I had purchased at Hobby Lobby and is one of many I have/had in my kitchen. The sign I found a couple of years ago at a junk sale and had tossed aside till I could figure out what I wanted to do with it. I repainted the sign in colors I liked to match the house today. When Jerry came in this evening from work he nailed it all together for me and we sat it over the tops of the two wisteria vines.

I think it's darling even if it's all homemade and thrown together.

Live each day as if it were your last,

Tuesday Treasures

Even though this collection is not very large it is one of my favorites. Someday I will be adding more to it. It's my collection of perfume bottles. I just love dainty, delicate, colorful bottles.

This first one is a real favorite of mine. I'm not sure how old (if at all) it is. My last ex (asshole) brought it home to me one day. I hate the memories behind the bottle but loved the bottle so much I did decide to keep it. If anyone has any clue about the bottle let me know.

This perfume bottle was given to me by my sister one year for my birthday. It is so delicate and dainty.

This one is really nothing special I just loved the bottle itself. The perfume was really nice but doesn't last long when sprayed. It is Brittney Spears Fantasy perfume.

If anyone else would like to show off their Tuesday Treasures then just place your link with Mr. Linky below. I really wish I could get more of you to play along. I love looking at what everyone considers their treasures. Thank you to those who are playing and showing off their beautiful treasures.

Happy Treasure Hunting,

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY....April 20, 2009

Outside my window...The beautiful bright sun is shining, the wind is lightly blowing and there's no rain. Yippee!!!!!

I am thinking...That today will be a good day to finally plant my rose bushes, hydrangea bush and my two wisteria vines.

I am thankful for...getting to work at home doing what I love most.

From the learning rooms...I've learned that if you plant veggies in containers and the neighbor has outdoor cats they automatically assume it is a large litter box.

From the kitchen...Same as usual. dishes calling my name.

I am wearing...a tired worn face today. I didn't get enough sleep.

I am creating...my container garden this week.

I am going...No where except for tomorrow and will go with Trucker for his annual butt poking test.

I am reading...Still the same book from weeks ago.

I am hoping...we have no more rain for at least two weeks.

I am hearing...My dog scratching, the kittens meowing, some of them are actually slurping at mommas boobies. They sound hilarious when they do that.

Around the house...A typical Monday after the weekend of doing much of nothing. Lots of cleaning to do, and finding a home for the things that no one bothers to put back up.

One of my favorite things...is the fragrance from the flowers outside.

A few plans for the rest of the week...working around here. Now doesn't that sound exciting?

Here is picture thought I am sharing...One of the reason's we don't sleep well at night.

Wishing everyone a simple life,

Stolen from Country Girl on the Chesapeake Bay

Yes I admit it, I am a thief. I stole this Meme from Marlene at Country Girl on the Chesapeake Bay today as I had nothing for today's post. Thanks Marlene.

1. Do you prefer reality TV or dramas or comedies?

I don't really have a preference on any of them. I love them all. But must admit I am a sucker for reality shows. Especially Survivor.

2.
If you could have free cosmetic surgery, what would you have done? a. Well being as the question doesn't say just One Thing I have several. I would have a boob job to put them back where they belong (which is not around my mid section or my underarms). b. Then I would have a double chin fixer upper. I only need one of them not two as I have now. c. I would have the fat sucked right out of that mid section as well. I don't need that much storage area.

3.
What are you itching to get but you haven't 'bitten the bullet'?

A brand spanking new refrigerator would be so nice to have.

4.
Do you have a bad habit that you hope your children don't pick up?

Now that one is easy peasy. It would be that they never ever try smoking a cigarette.

5.
What was your favorite meal growing up?

I remember loving really everything that mom cooked but my favorite was Sunday dinners. It was always roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy and veggies. Followed by some big Sunday dessert.

6.
What meal did you have as a youngster that you don't have as an adult?

None. Seriously everything that mom cooked we still have today.

7.
What is your earliest memory of a "vacation"? Where'd you go?

That would have to be the summer we went camping for the first time. The family went to Heber Springs, Arkansas at the dam campsite. We had a new tent, cook stove and the works. But I remember Mom insisting we had to go where there electrical hookups for fans at night. I remember swimming for so long in the lake that when we got out our bodies still felt as if we were in water. Does anyone know what I am talking about there? I also remember thinking how weird my mom was because this was in the late 60's early 70's and mom had had her hair done that day with hairspray and also wear pantyhose with her shorts.

8.
What was the "Best Thing" you ever got for Christmas, before age 12?

A complete little girls dream of a kitchen set. The stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, table and matching chairs. The whole works, even pots and pans, plastic food and little broom and mop. Little did I know mom was preparing me for "helping her out in cleaning".

Thanks Marlene this was a fun Meme to do. Now I'll leave you with a picture of my Princess. I'm sure you'll laugh and if she knew I posted this she would have a fit. So I won't tell her. She doesn't look much like a Princess here.

Happy Saturday everyone. Enjoy the weekend.

Frugal Friday

Have you ever really looked at how much you spend on household cleaning products? How safe are they? for your kids? pets? the environment? and yourself?

With the season now being spring many of you have spring cleaning on your minds. I thought I would share a few recipes for cleaning products with you today. I started using these a few months ago and so far I love them. They only cost pennies to make as well. That's the real bonus for my family. By making your own you can also control the scents and intensity of the scents.

1. Tub and sink cleanser

Fill a clean Parmesan cheese container or a powdered sugar shaker with baking soda. If you would like to add scent then put about 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil in. You're now ready to clean your sinks, tubs and showers.

Store brand price: Comet 21 oz=1.19

Homemade version: baking soda 16oz=.69

Savings=.50

2. Window Cleaner

Fill an empty trigger spray bottle (these can be found at your local stores or use an old Windex bottle) with one part white vinegar and three parts water. Shake to mix and you're ready to clean your windows.

Store brand price: Windex=$3.49 a bottle

Homemade version: vinegar and water=.89

Savings=$2.60 each time you refill

3. Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Make a thin paste of Borax and Lemon Juice. Flush your toilet then rub the paste onto the toilet bowl. Let sit for about one hour and then flush again. Your bowl is sparkling clean.

Store brand=Lysol toilet bowl cleaner=$2.99

Homemade version=Borax and lemon juice=.05

Savings=about .35 each time you use it.

4. Spot Free Dishes in your dishwasher

Add vinegar to your rinse compartment in the dishwasher, careful not to overfill. Then wash your dishes as you normally do.

Store brand=Sunlight rinse aid=$3.19

Homemade version=1 gallon of vinegar=$1.39

Savings=$79.51

One gallon of vinegar will give you the same amount as 25.6 bottles of rinse aid.

5. Floor cleaner

One cup vinegar to one gallon of water. Add essential oil for scent if you desire.

Store brand=Mop and Glo=$3.79

Homemade version=About .08 a bucket

Savings=about $3.71 per use

6. Furniture Polish

Mix 1/4 cup olive oil or mineral oil with 4 TBLS of white vinegar and 2 tsp of lemon juice. Pour it into a spray or squirt bottle and shake well. This will need to be kept in the refrigerator after each use as the lemon juice will sour. Or you can use lemon essential oil instead with no refrigeration. add about 0-30 drops of the lemon essential oil.

Store brand=Pledge Spray=$3.99?

Homemade version=.50

Savings=You save $2.00 each time you make your own.

7. Disinfectant Spray

Fill a trigger spray bottle with distilled or purified water to the top. Add 3 TBLS of castile soap, and 20-30 drops of tea tree oil. This can be found in health stores. shake to mix well.

Store brand=Lysol Antibacterial Kitchen Cleaner=$2.99

Homemade version=tea tree oil and castile soap=.95 cents

Savings=$2.04 each time you refill your bottle.

Spring Brings Babies

I know many of you love cats and especially kittens. So I thought I would share some love with you. Our house is filled to the brim with the new spring baby kitties. Each mother had five in total. You've seen pictures and videos of one group of them and here's some of the newest additions and the older ones as well. I wish I could keep each of them but just can't. So if you would like to come visit me here in Arkansas and take home a little bundle of joy let me know. I can wish can't I?

I've spent hours enjoying the older ones. There are just so precious. The younger ones I watched mommy birth for hours on them. That was a totally new sight for me to behold. One would think at 47 years old I would have seen this by now but I had not. I even had a hand in it. A couple of them would not have made it out of the (pouch?) if I hadn't assisted them with it. LOL. Gross but thrilling too.
